Idaho summers are dry and intense, beautiful for growing peonies, but tough on cut stems once they are indoors. Follow these four engineering-approved steps to get the most from your market bouquet.

1	The Fresh Cut — Do This First As soon as you get home from the market, trim each stem at a 45-degree angle under running water. This increases the surface area for water intake and removes the air bubble that forms in the stem on the drive home.

2	Room-Temperature Water in a Clean Vase Use room-temperature water — not cold, not warm. Avoid softened water if possible; the salt content can shorten vase life. Change the water every two days and re-trim stems each time.

3	Location Matters: Away from Heat and Fruit Place your vase away from direct sunlight, heat vents, and ripening fruit. Fruit releases ethylene gas, which accelerates wilting. A cool interior wall or shaded shelf is ideal.

4	The Nightly Chill — Our Secret for Longevity For maximum vase life, place your peonies in a cool garage or refrigerator overnight. This mimics the cool Idaho nights they grew up in, slowing the bloom and extending your enjoyment by two to three extra days.
