Big Ben (Paeonia lactiflora ‘Big Ben’)

Rich, bold, and beautifully dependable, Big Ben is a classic red peony that has remained a garden favorite since its introduction in 1943 by Edward Auten. Celebrated for its large, fully double “bomb”-type blooms, this variety displays medium to deep cherry-red centers framed by generous outer guard petals. As the flowers mature, their coloring can deepen toward luscious fuchsia-magenta tones, creating a dramatic and luxurious display.

Blooming early to mid-season (late spring to early summer), Big Ben produces impressively large blossoms that open fully and hold their form beautifully. The blooms are highly fragrant, offering a rich, sweet scent that enhances both garden spaces and floral arrangements.

Growing 34–36 inches tall, Big Ben stands confidently on stiff, sturdy stems that typically do not require staking, though support hoops can provide added protection during heavy rain. Its strong structure and vibrant color make it especially valuable as a commercial cut flower, long regarded as one of the finest early double red peonies available.

Exceptionally heat tolerant and requiring minimal chill time to bloom, Big Ben performs particularly well in southern climates; making it an outstanding choice for warmer regions where some peonies struggle.
