Pêcher Peony (Paeonia lactiflora ‘Pêcher’) – Also known as Fleur de Pêcher (Peach Blossom) or Noémie Demay

Introduced in 1867 by French hybridizer Calot, Pêcher is a treasured heirloom peony renowned for its intoxicating fragrance and romantic, color-shifting blooms. A favorite of the Alaska cut flower industry and long admired in Europe, this classic variety carries a perfume so exquisite it is said to have been captured by the French fragrance houses.

Its large blooms open in soft blush-pink to delicate peach tones, then gradually fade to creamy white as they mature; creating a luminous, ever-changing display. Younger plants often produce more anemone-style flowers, while mature plants develop fuller, rose-shaped double blooms. Subtle red or bright pink flecks sometimes appear at the center, adding a charming and distinctive touch.

The flowers are borne on strong stems with a vigorous lactiflora growth habit, often producing multiple blooms per stem. Plants reach approximately 36–40 inches tall (commonly 28–36 inches in garden settings) and form a lush, bushy mound of glossy, dark green divided foliage that remains attractive throughout the season.

Blooming in mid-season (late spring to early summer), Pêcher thrives in USDA Zones 3–8 (and sometimes 9) and prefers full sun with well-drained, fertile soil. In warmer climates, a bit of afternoon shade is appreciated. Once established, this herbaceous perennial is long-lived, dependable, and remarkably rewarding.
