Sarah Bernhardt (Paeonia lactiflora ‘Sarah Bernhardt’)

Arguably the most famous peony in the world, Sarah Bernhardt has become the very face of peonies. Introduced in 1906 and named after the celebrated French actress, this award-winning heirloom remains one of the most beloved and widely grown varieties more than a century later.

Its enormous, 6–8 inch, fully double blooms unfurl in soft rose-pink tones reminiscent of peach blossom, often accented with slightly deeper pink undertones and occasional lighter edging. The petals are lush and abundant, forming romantic, cloud-like flowers that feel quintessentially spring. Blooming in late spring to early summer, the blossoms are lightly to agreeably fragrant and make a breathtaking display both in the garden and in vases.

Growing 24–36 inches tall and wide, Sarah Bernhardt forms a rounded mound of glossy, dark green foliage that remains attractive throughout the season. Strong stems support the blooms, though staking is often recommended to hold up the large, heavy flowers during peak bloom or rainy weather. Hardy in Zones 3–8 and deer-resistant, this herbaceous perennial is long-lived and low maintenance once established.

A classic choice for borders, specimen plantings, and cutting gardens, Sarah Bernhardt is especially treasured as a cut flower. Its large, fresh pink blooms are a staple of spring arrangements and wedding bouquets, prized for their fullness and timeless elegance.
